Judy B. Spiegel

Neil Myers was kind to foward Judy's Obit to us.....she was quite the scholar and as Neil said "A life well lived"

DR. JUDY BETH SPIEGEL-MOSES, 55, of Milford died Tuesday, July 1, 2003, in her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Judy Spiegel-Moses was born in Pittsburgh, daughter of the late Dr. Bernard and Ruth (Lerner) Spiegel.

She was a 1966 graduate of Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Syracuse University in 1970, obtained her Master's degree in Special Education from University of Delaware in 1974, and her Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland in 1984 .

She was an Administrator with the Milford School District for 30 years, retiring in 2000 as Director of Elementary and Special Education.  Judy Spiegel-Moses served on many professional and advisory committees including the Youth Education Advisory Task Force; the National Conference of Christians and Jews Inc., Delaware Region; the Advisory Committee of Sussex Elementary Consortium; and the Statewide Council on Programs for the Gifted and Talented. She received the 1991 Delaware Association for Childhood Education Hall of Excellence Award and was a published author in Focus on Early Childhood, Trade Secrets and Criteria. Her publications included "From Mastery Learning to Developmentally Appropriate: One District's Approach to Curriculum and Assessment Change" and "Dramatic Increase in Student Achievement in Delaware District." She was also a member of the Council for Exceptional Children, the American Association of School Administrators, the Delaware Association of School Administrators, Phi Delta Kappa, and the American Association of University Women. Throughout her career she also conducted a number of in-service programs, taught workshops and made presentations. She served on the board of directors for Kent Sussex Industries Inc., was co-chair for the Milford Memorial Hospital Fair and Chinese Auction and was co-chair for the Milford Chamber of Commerce Fall Fling Festival and served on the Sussex Company Scholarship Committee.

She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Charles Moses; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Robert and Madeline Moses of Georgetown and John Moses of Salisbury, Md.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Ronald N. and Dr. JoAnn Spiegel of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren, Michael, Bailey, Allison and Madison Moses; and eight nieces and a nephew.

Services were at noon in the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford. The family observed shiva at the Moses residence, 106 Lakelawn Drive, Milford.

Burial was in Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.

Judy Beth Spiegel Library Memorial Fund – Established by the family of Judy Spiegel, a Milford School District administrator, to benefit the library at Benjamin Banneker School.
